Adult Learner Resources

The Literacy Council provides instructors and volunteers to work with adult learners to address the barriers that adults face when reading, writing or speaking the English language. Our services are without charge and all information is kept confidential.

One on One Tutoring is available for any adult who has a reading level lower than ninth grade. Learners will meet with their tutor for two hours per week.  Once a learner has completed a test stating they are at a ninth grade reading level, they will be referred to programs for higher level learners through Rock Valley College and Goodwill.

How to Become a Learner:

  1. Call Bonnie at 815-963-7323 ext. 18 or email Bonnie at bonnie@theliteracycouncil.org
  2. Take an assessment test to determine what grade level you are reading at.
  3. Express your needs and the most convenient time and place for you.
  4. Get placed with a volunteer tutor or begin attending classes.
