Become a Tutor:
The Literacy Council provides volunteer tutors with the professional education, materials and ongoing support you will need to teach basic reading, writing and English language skills. When you help someone to read or to speak English, you enable that individual to take advantage of a new world of opportunities – at home, at work, and in our community. Help us bring our mission to life.

Becoming a Volunteer at The Literacy Council has an impact!
“This program makes a significant impact in our community and utilizes resources effectively with great volunteer management.” ~ United Way of Rock River Valley Committee
“Tutoring is so satisfying, I love it! I’m learning as much as my student.” ~ Betty
“Alexandre used to call me mentor and now I am teacher. Both have a special meaning and are said with respect. This is a testimony to the work we are all doing here. I always find myself building up The Literacy Council. ~ Todd
“Ashanti is doing awesome! At the beginning of the year she didn’t know how to sound out any words, but today she read me a whole book! I’m really proud of her.” ~ Brian, an I READ Volunteer
Become an I READ Volunteer:
I READ is a partnership between United Way of Rock River Valley and The Literacy Council. Through this early-grade reading program, I READ matches volunteer reading mentors with Kindergarten students to increase reading proficiency. Volunteers mentor up to two students a week during the school day and are encouraged to remain with their students through third grade. I READ serves Rockford Public School District, Harlem School District, Meridian Community Unit District, and Oregon Community Unit District.
